Crazy! Right? I can't explain it. The music isn't that good, they can't really sing or dance. Despite these obvious truths, I had the best time in long time. Why? My youth. I remember when I attended my first NKOTB concert, I was 13 and wasn't really familar with them. A friend, invited me to go to the concert and her older sister agreed to accompany us. We stood in line for over 7 hours to buy our tickets (no internet then). At the time, I didn't undertsand what all the fuss was about, and then the day of the concert arrived. The lights went down and then they took the stage, one look at Jordan Knight and I was in love. I still don't know what came over me, but I was a fan immediately. Two years later I was over my love, replaced with Nirvana, U2, Sinead O'Connor or anything else that was playing on the radio, or so I thought. Last spring, Ingrid and I discovered that the Kids, at the ages of 36-40, would be going on tour again and the love returned. So I danced, screamed and jumped my way back to a teenager, and it was a wonderful time. And I still can't explain it.

My favourite teen crushes:

1. Ralph Macchio

2. Jordan Knight

3. Dana Ashbrook

4. Ethan Hawke

5. Robert Sean Leonard

Cooking Tip of the day: Pizza was delicious and a favorite when I was a teenager and still is, especially with bacon.

International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day. Does this mean anything to you? Why do we celebrate it? I think sometimes living in a privilaged western society we forget about it's importance. Are women still treated equal in our society? No. When male managers comment on the colour of my blouse instead of my record breaking fundraising totals, I would say no. When a hiring manager deciedes against a woman is their 20's or 30's, because they may get pregnant, again I would say no. When many woman feel that they are not adquate because they do not look a certain way, I would say no. I am sure you can think of millon more examples. What's upsetting is you probably know some examples from personal experience. As cheesy as this may sound, I guess one thing we can do is think about these issues and act accordingly. I truely believe many of the worlds problems will be solved once woman and men are truely viewed as equals.

Many of the reasons, why I am lucky to be me:

1. I love my job and the people I work with

2. I have amazing friends and family

3. I get to do what I want when I want, no restrictions (although I may change my mind one day)

4. I think for the first time I am starting to be comfortable in my own skin

5. I have freckles

Cooking tip of the day: Don't beat yourself up if you come home and you don't feel like cooking, you are not lazy. Instead pick an activity you love (watch your favorite TV show, read a book or a magazine, spend some time with family or friends) and order some take out from a new place you have been meaning to try, and enjoy!

Where does the time go?

I am constantly amazed by how fast time flies. I cannot believe that I am 33. It really does feel like yesterday (more like 9 years ago) that I graduated from University. It was not to long ago that I was staring out my window wondering how will all that snow melt, and now I am thinking about the impact fall will have at work. It really blows my mind! One year blends into the next. Do you remember when you were younger and one month seemed like forever, now it doesn't seem long enough. I am not complaining.... just an observation.

What's worth the wait?

1. When an ambition or milestone is realized

2. Roasted garlic

3. The season premiere of a favorite show

4. A perfectly prepared and delicious meal

5. Love (speaking of which extra, extra old cheddar cheese)

Cooking tip of the day: Slow roasted anything tastes wonderful. It enhances and adds depth to whatever your eating and is worth the hours it may take. Try slow roasting tomatoes and adding the to your favorite pasta, soup or on their own. Delicious!

The Perfect Day

OH MY GOD. I had the perfect 'Kylie Day'. So good that I had to tell you all about it, NOW. I am in New Orleans for work. So here goes:

This morning I woke up at my leisure. I walked downtown to the French Quarter. Walked around for a few hours (nothing opens until 10 am) Had a cafe au lait with a croissant for Breakfast and headed to the shops. I went to Sak's fifth avenue were I was treated like I had a million dollars to spend. Oh the clothes! The makeup! The Christmas decor! Wonderful.

The afternoon was spent at the conference. THEN... it gets better.

A cocktail reception with a delicious gin and tonic and then it gets better. ....Dinner at Nola's (one of Emeril Lagasse's restaurants). OH MY GOD. We were able to make reservations through the hotel's concierge. Usually there is a few months wait, but I guess they leave room for tourists. Here is what I ate; I had the daily specials paired with a wine with each course.

Seared Rare Yellowfin Tuna with Baby Spinach, Shaved Onion, Orange Supremes and Citrus Braised Fennel Vinaigrette with 2006 Chablis 'Champs Royaux', William Fevre (Burgundy France) *** This was my favorite course, believe it or not***

Braised Pork and Goat Cheese Ravioli with Kiln Dried Cherries, Sage Cream, Root Vegetable Crisps and Port Wine Reduction (2003 Pinot Noir, Alois Lageder (Alto Adige, Italy)

Buttermilk Fried Breast of Chicken with Bourbon Mashed Sweet Potatoes, Smithfield Ham Cream Gravy and Sauteed Sugar Snap Peas. 2004 McCrea Counoise Ciel de Cheval Vineyard (Red Mountain, Washington)

Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Pie

(2005 Muscat 'Casta Diva', Gutierrez de la Vega, Alicante, Spain)

I think the dreams of the Year of the Kylie have been fulfilled.

Cooking tip of the day: Spend the money at a gourmet restaurant. I hope that my union CUPE 2424 and Carleton University come to an agreement soon. Over the last few weeks, I have thought a lot about the place of unions in today's society. I know there is still a need for them, I also know I am well taken care of at Carleton. Would that be the case if there wasn't a union? I am not sure. The one thing that I hate about this whole thing is the tension a strike or lockout has on a workplace. Today, the first day of our strike, there were already some moments of high tension, moments when people could have gotten hurt (car vs. picketer). I also witnessed someone from our union (I do not know who they were) cross the picket line, and you knew in that instant whatever office they work in on campus things would not be the same. I am also frustrated because I hate not knowing what is happening one day to the next. So think of me at 6am when I am on the picket line tomorrow!!

Social Activities that don't break the bank:

1. Go for coffee or bubble tea
2. Go to cheap night at the movies (Tuesdays only costs $4.25)
3 Go to a museum or art gallery on a Thursday - it's free!
4. Read a book.
5. Go to a CBC radio live event - again it's free!

Cooking Tip of the Day: Kraft dinner is delicious and so cheap!!

A Good Blog

I discovered a blog during the NHL playoffs. A co-worker forwarded me Scott Feschuk's blog as he had some pretty funny entires on hockey. Since then I have regulary read his blog. Mr. Feschuk has been a speechwriter for Paul Martin and a writer for This Hour has 22 minutes. Pretty interesting carreer. Though they are suprisingly related, he had to write bullshit for both. Anyways, read up, I hope you get a laugh or two.

http://forums.macleans.ca/advansis/?mod=for&act=dis&eid=13

Take a look and let me know what you think!

What August brings:

1. Back to school ads ( sometimes I still wish I was going shopping for back to school supplies)

2. Many birthdays to celebrate (Andrew, Kevin, Tammy!)

3. Many Humid Days (bleh!)

4. The SuperEx

5. Late, great summer flicks (see last post).

Cooking tip of the day: Be sure to pick up some corn on the cob. It's now ready. It has been suggested that when cooking the corn, you leave the husks on when boiling the ears (of corn - silly!). It will allow for better tasting corn and apparently the husks and all that stringy stuff will just fall off. I would suggest removing the outer husk first, prior to cooking.

Summer Movies

Over the last few weeks I have seen some summer flicks. What did I think?

No Reservations falls short. It's cute and leaves you hungry (the food looks delicious) and it's other redeeming quality is Aaron Eckhart. Rent it only if the premise appeals to you, don't bother going to see it.

Hairspray, I really enjoyed this film, it's very entertaining and very funny. Some people feel that John Travolta is a draw for this film, I find him more of a distraction. Travolta playing a women is never believable. If you like musicals pay full price, if not consider it on a half price Tuesday.

I then moved on to the Simpsons. I have never been a huge fan of the Simpsons, mostly because my brother liked it when I was growing up. But I have always appreciated it's commentary on modern American life. My brother was excited to see it, so I thought it would be best to see it with him. It was pretty funny. Although I thought the movie would take more chances, and go beyond it's normal sitcom boundaries, but it didn't. It was well worth the $4.20 admission.

Finally, I saw the movie of the summer. The Bourne Ultimatum. This movie is great, not only does it star Matt, but it is exactly what an action movie should be. It has a great cast, and uses them to their ability (i.e. Julia Stiles has maybe 5 lines, but is in the film for maybe 45 minutes). The action scenes are wonderfully orchestrated. It's a non -stop ride. The film is never gory, but allows you to understand the pain that the characters feel and did I mention that Matt is in it? Pay full price to see this film. In fact, if you need someone to go to this film with you, I will. I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

What I did this long weekend:

1. Had some bacon with Neil and Cindy (okay it was a delicious pasta with some bacon in it)

2. Bubble Tea

3. Pizza with the folks from Diabetes

4. Dinner with Adelaide, Andrew and Christie (Happy 31st birthday - Andrew!!)

5. Brunch with my brothers, mom and a visit to the Treasures of China Exhibit at the Museum of Civilization.

Cooking Tip of the Day: On hot summer days, prepare a salad. Just be sure to add some sort of protein to make it a complete meal. Serve with some fresh rolls. Delicious.

THE MAN=GEORGE

It was only a matter of time before I dedicated a post to George Clooney. He is awesome. I love him. For some many reasons, mainly for that fact that he is 100% cool. Other reasons, he made my all time favorite show ER, I pretty much enjoy any film he is in, and he is still the mysterious bachelor. And his name is George I have attached a link to a quiz about him. Let me know your score!

http://www.cbc.ca/cgi-bin/quiz/quiz.cgi?quiz=arts_clooney

Things that I like about summer (I am trying to be positive here!)

1. BBQs
2. Summer Trips
3. Days that are sunny and do not pass 25 degrees
4. The lassier faire attitude people seem to take on
5. Cheesy summer flicks
6. ICE CREAM (okay - it makes every season)

Cooking tip of the day: BBQ!! Almost everything tastes better on a BBQ (except for maybe pasta).

I'm your #1 Fan

Tonight was a sad night for my brother. His beloved Sens seemed to have lost it all - Lord Stanley. I believe he is the Senator's #1 one fan. Truly heartbreaking. I am not an expert on the subject of hockey in any way shape or form, but what I noticed watching the last 5 games, was that the team had given up, and it showed. A metaphor for life?.... obviously.

So if you see my bro around in the next couple of days be kind. He feels the weight of an entire team on his back.

Why I love watching NHL playoff games:

1. They are exciting to watch

2. Getting together with friends to watch the game

3. The snacks that pop up

4. It's a subject you can pretty much talk to anyone in the city about

5. Emery

Cooking Tip of the Day: A great snack for game time or anytime is nachos. I like to cook some onions and peppers up in a little oil first, then place them on top of a single layer of nacho chips (the best are farm boy's), then add some of your favorite salsa, top with cheese (the best is extra old cheddar) and then some chopped tomatoes. Cook in the oven for about 10-15 minutes, for the last few minutes of cooking time, broil the nachos, that way the cheese will be nice and bubbly. Serve with sour cream and if your lucky some guacamole.

No Time for Excuses

It's almost summer, and I have been spending my on-line time on Facebook. That is not an excuse. It's been a pretty hectic few months. That's not an excuse. I have nothing to say. That is not an excuse (that in fact may be a lie). I am lazy, Again not an excuse.

I am very upset that my beloved Veronica Mars has been cancelled. A critically acclaimed show, cancelled because it doesn't make enough money, replaced by the reality show based on the Pussycat dolls. There is no excuse. Or how about Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip? A great show! Wonderfully acted and scripted.... cancelled because lack of $$$. Have you seen 30D Rock? If you haven't, you probably won't get a chance to see it again... it's been put on hiatus, probably being replaced by some pirate reality show. I don't buy the $$ issue as the main reason for these shows being cancelled, really a lame excuse. These shows make you feel good about watching television. Now I just have to feel guilty, when I watch Canada' s Next Top Model. Now that's definitely not an excuse. I really should concern myself with other issues.

Recent Ongoings

1. I work 9-5

2. My hair is a little longer

3. I got a IPOD thanks to SBP.

4. I saw spidey 3 ( and I liked it!)

5. On line dating continues...that;s all I really have to say about that.

Cooking Tip of the day: Make something with rhubarb. I have been pretty busy lately. My time has been occupied by nothing that significant but I love being busy. Work has been busy, with the Winter campaign coming to an end; my hours will return to normal in a few weeks and for that I am excited! Working at a University means summer arrives early. Once all the students leave, the University seems to take a nice long breather. I love my lunch hours by the Ottawa River, reading a book.

I have been out dancing at a bar twice. Yes, it is true!

I have been out on a blind date (well sort of).

I have been to the Le Nordik Spa. Unlike anything I have ever done before, but I felt great afterwards and my skin looked great too.

I have had many nice meals out with friends and family.

Oh and finally ( and maybe embarrassingly) I have joined facebook.

Life is good.

What I hope to accomplish today:

1. Clean the bathroom.

2. Bake some peanut butter and chocolate squares.

3. Laundry

4. Enjoy a fantastic easter meal with friends and family.

5. Watch some Grey's.

Cooking Tip of the day: My favorite and famous tomato sauce: 1 can of diced tomatoes, 1 chopped onion, 2-3 gloves of garlic, a little olive oil, 1 tsp of brown sugar, basil 1 tsp, oregano 1tsp (if you happen to have fresh herbs, add them at the end) , a shake of hot pepper flakes, salt and pepper to taste. Put all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil; then simmer for at least 30 minutes. At this point add some tomato paste until it reaches desired consistency. Simmer for another 15 minutes or so. Serve with hot pasta. My favorite is cheese tortellini. And finally sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan.

* this sauce is great the next day, and is awesome as a sauce for pizza*

The end of the weekend...

A picture that was taken on a weekend afternoon.

I really don't like Sundays evenings. A year ago they weren't so bad because Grey's was on, but they still have this depressing factor. Soon Monday will be here and with that the work week. Sunday evenings brings a little bit of dread. A list of things that should have been done but didn't, and a new to do list forms of upcoming tasks. UGGG!!!! and I am feeling that right now. Funny thing is I will forgot about this feeling at approximately 8:00 am on Monday morning.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and I wish you all a wonderful week!

What I did this weekend:

1. Saw Zodiac... great film.

2. Ate every single meal out... some would say that's a shame. I loved it!

3. Took my cat to the vet... again.

4. Bought a new watch..... which I love.

5. Watered my plant.

Now I know why I have that feeling of dread... I didn't accomplish anything but I did have great times with friends and family. Man.. are we ever hard on ourselves!!

Cooking tip of the day: Take a break from the kitchen every once and a while, you will come back with more energy and vigour.

Happy Anniversary!

Today is my 1st anniversary working at Carleton University. Time certainly flies. I have noticed a change in myself over the last year. I am happy. People who don't see me often have commented on how relaxed I look, I attribute this to my change in workplace. My last job did not make me happy. I was miserable. Some of you may know what it is like to wake up every morning and dread the upcoming day. It's terrible! In retrospect it wasn't worth it. Now it wasn't always like that. I did learn a lot in my position as operations manager, but the job and the corporate culture changed, and it wasn't for me. If you or someone you know feels this way about their current working situation, tell then to quit and find something else. It isn't worth it. Soon enough another opportunity will find your way.

I love working at Carleton, the people are great, the benefits are great and they are really flexible with your working arrangements, and in one year I have already been given many learning opportunities They are committed to seeing you grow professionally. A great working environment. Now don't get me wrong, there are tough times, but it is so nice to wake up and look forward to the day.

Projects I have take on lately:

1. I joined a political party

2. Started researching the possibility of completing my MBA

3.Internet dating - it is wacked! But seems fun!

4. Sent my resume to the Stephen Lewis foundation, I would like to volunteer there.

5. Researching the purchase of new tires for my car.

Cooking tip of the day: My new sandwich discovery (well wrap). Take a tortilla, spread some hummus on it, sprinkle with a little trail mix, feta cheese, cucumber and red pepper. Roll up and enjoy. In June of that year, I was so optimistic. I was going to change the world. I would continue to protest Tim Hortons (yes.... I attended a rally to protest the introduction of Tims on campus, knowing a mom and pop shop would lose out in the end), corporate takeovers of the world, oh and the list goes on. Almost 8 years later, and I've lost my will. Money talks, without it you might as well be silent because no one is going to hear you. I know what happened to my idealism. The working world, chipped it away. Even though I have worked in the not- for- profit sector, my cynicism level is high, or at least it was. Some of you know that I work with University students. They have incited in me a new level of hope for the future. There enthusiasm is contagious. They discuss current events with vigor and believe they can make a difference. And they will. I am going to try to get back in the game and volunteer my time and believe that what I do for a living does make a difference. It does. Education is one of the greatest gifts anyone can receive. A gift that everyone should have the right to open. With government cutbacks getting larger and larger, philanthropy will play a larger role in university and colleges across the country (for all you cynics out there - this was not presented to me at work as a brainwashing video) I guess what I needed was inspiration. I will take action! I will keep you posted on what happens! So there!

March brings ( a list of the obvious and not so obvious)....

1. CC 'sbirthday...yippee more cake.

2. Time change ... longer days!

3. Spring!

4. My last month working nights!

5. St. Patricks Day

Cooking Tip of the day: Nothing beats a box of mac and cheese. My favs? Oh I know what some of you may be thinking... why Kylie why? I enjoy the frivolous, romantic comedy on occasion. I enjoy the clothes and watching people have perfect lives. This movie however annoyed me. The movie is about a turbulent mother daughter relationship. A mother who worries about her daughter because she can't keep a man!! Her mother doesn't seem satisfied that her daughter has a successful business, friends, great apartment and a loving family. The only way her daughter could be truly happy is to have a man. Disturbing. Maybe I am a little agitated because over the last week I must have been asked, 'Kylie do you have a man?' a billion times. When I answered no, most people presented me with a face full of pity. THAT PISSES ME OFF!!!! Why don't people ask how my career is going? What my plans are for the summer?, or even, what I am having for dinner? Please do not feel sorry for me... you crazy people. Feel sorry for people who don't have great friends, a good job, a great family or a kitchen -aid mixer.

Upcoming events in my life:

1. A 3 day course this week, on discovering the leader that I am.

2. Lost Party!

3. OC series finale party

4. Cooking a homemade lasagna (which I am very excited about - I have been researching the recipes for weeks)

5. A haircut

6. A birthday party

7. A birthday dinner

8. The Academy awards

Cooking tip of the day: When selecting ingredients for your recipes, always buy the best quality ingredients you can afford. Today, however was busy. I really enjoyed my day. It started with brunch and shopping with my brother Peter. I then attended a first birthday celebration. I then made dinner for my family, and finished off the day with dessert with a friend. While my day was jam - packed...I love days like this. Social activity after social activity. If only I could get paid to be a social butterfly.

Things that have bothered me tremendously lately:

1. Ottawa Mayor - Larry O'Brien. I think he may be responsible for making Ottawa a complete mess. He is well on his way to accomplishing his goal.

2. Environment Minister and my MP - Mr. Baird. He is an idiot. According to him, if we follow Kyoto protocols, Canada could become like Moscow. What is that even suppose to mean? Is this a scare tactic from the 1960's. He has no idea what is taking about.

3.The fact that Anna Nicole's death was the most important headline for almost every news source on Thursday.

Cooking tip of the day: For a special and easy breakfast treat. Make a smoothie. Combine fresh or frozen fruit, yogurt, juice and a little honey. Delicious and nutritious.

Some Internet Finds

Hello again. I once again apologize for my lack of posts. I have been feeling a bit negative lately. So I figured if I haven't got anything nice to say I shouldn't say it.
As some of you may know I am new to the world of the Internet at least for my own entertainment.I have come across some sites that I really like, some of you may be aware of them. Either way check it out!

The first two allow you to catch up on any new or old TV shows you may be addicted to. There are also movies. Now the quality is not 100% but it is decent enough to get your fix. Mine is Veronica Mars.

http://www.peekvid.com/

http://www.alluc.org/alluc/

The final Internet site, I love. I listen to it all day at work. It is a website that lets you design your own radio station. You can determine a station by choosing an artist you like or even a song. The station will then play songs for you based on the artist or song you have chosen. You can then rate the songs as they play, and the station will continue to alter itself to your liking. Currently I have a mix of JT, George Michael, U2, the Pernice Brothers and Sarah Harmer radio stations. The only hitch is that you can only be a US citizen to subscribe, the site only confirms this by entering a postal code. I just entered 90210.

http://pandora.com/.

Enjoy!

Adventures I would like embark on in the upcoming year:

1. Go to Beckta.

2. Go out East this summer.

3. Go out West this fall

4. Attend the Toronto International Festival.

The funny thing is I think if I had a choice, and only could pick one I would pick Beckta.

Cooking Tip of the day: Make a soup. It's good for you and not very time consuming. And easy! It's so comforting and delicious!

Movie Mania

I know it's been a while, and I apologize to any of you who have checked for a new post, and there was nothing. So I guess it's time to give an update on what I've been up to. Not much really, but I have committed myself to seeing a lot of movies before Oscar night (February 25th, 2007). A few years back I would have considered myself a movie buff and by the time the nominations were announced for the Academy Awards I would have seen most of the nominees. I can no longer pronounce that to be true. Luckily movie fever has hit me, and I have already seen two movies in the last two days with more to come this week.

Friday I saw the Queen (It's been a while that I have seen a G rated movie). I really enjoyed the film...it didn't feel that I was in the theatre for almost two hours, time just flew by. Helen Miren is amazing in this picture. The movie is worth seeing just for her performance.

Last night I saw Stranger than Fiction which I don't think is nominated for any academy awards, but it has been on my list for awhile. Great movie! I love Will Ferrill and it was nice to see him in a film where he wasn't making an ass of himself to get some laughs. The funny thing about watching this film in a theatre, some people thought because Will Ferrill was on the screen that they should laugh, almost forced. There are funny moments is this film - but not the what I like to call from the belly laugh. I don't think some people knew how to react to him, playing a dramatic role. The only thing that was annoying about the viewing experience was that this one man insisted on laughing for the entire film. I felt bad for the person accompanying him. Then I thought, imagine you fell in love with someone who managed to not only embarrass himself everytime he was in public but annoyed everyone around him. Now that is true love.

Some meals I have had in the past week (all homemade by me or someone who cooked for me):

1. Spinach and cheese burritos with a tomato salsa

2. Ham and cheese strata

3. Cheddar and ale risotto with cherry tomatoes and broccoli

4. Vegetable Korma with basmati rice

5. Fettuccine with pancetta, white wine and spinach.

All delicious!

Cooking tip of the day: Read as many cookbooks as you can (if so inclined), not so much to imitate the recipes but to give you ideas for your own culinary masterpieces. A good place to pick up cookbooks for cheap, is in the bargain section of chapters/indigo. Often they have beautiful cookbooks for a fraction of the price. Last month I purchased 5 cookbooks and one novel for $26.00, all from the bargain section.

A loss for Words.....

It doesn't happen often but I'm having trouble putting my thoughts into clear, concise sentences (ha!). So some thoughts from today:

1. I said goodbye to my good friend Lisa as she heads off on an amazing adventure. She is getting married this week to her Alex and then they are off to Australia for a few years, on the way they are visiting Thailand, Japan and Vietnam. I wish you both the very best and hopefully I'll visit you soon. I'll miss you!

2.I really need to do laundry.

3. I enjoyed a lovely corn chowder for lunch.

Cooking tip of the day: When a baking recipe calls for sifting the flour with salt, baking powder or baking soda. Save yourself some time and mix the ingredients together with a whisk. It's almost as effective and saves some time.

My Sense of Entitlement (probably needs to be questioned)

Today I went to the grocery store to buy the week's worth of groceries. On my weekly (or thereabouts) visits, I usually get very frustrated because there is usually something on the list that isn't available at the grocery store where I shop. Today I was very upset because the store was out of cauliflower. I became very agitated. I wanted cauliflower (for a vegetable korma for Thursday's dinner) and now my whole grocery shopping experience was ruined. I thought this while I picked up some raspberries, some fresh herbs and other produce. During a later car ride, I began to question my earlier temper tantrum. Why should I have cauliflower in February, let alone raspberries? I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and it's mid January, and I am upset because the store was out of cauliflower! Should I even be entitled to cauliflower in January? Raspberries? Cherries? I am probably being dramatic and I pretty much love the fact that I can make any recipe in any of my cookbooks anytime of year and will probably be able to find the ingredients somewhere in Ottawa. Another problem with the world. I will probably complain next week when the store is out of snow peas. Not sure which is worse.

What I did today
1. Went to the gym (which I do 5-6 times a week)

2. I thought about the Ipod, the digital camera and the tires I want for my birthday (my sense of entitlement goes way beyond the produce section of the supermarket)
3. Had brunch and enjoyed some lady grey tea ... you should try it.
4. Went to the grocery store
5. Made dinner for a friend and watched 4 hrs of 24.

Cooking Tip of the Day: If you are short for time but still crave something more refined, use prepared foods (a contradiction) to your advantage. For example take a prepared pasta sauce and add fresh herbs, a veggie, maybe even some wine and volia something that tastes like you spent all afternoon slaving over your stove (is it always about appearances?)!

Judging the Art or The Artist?

When choosing what films you will see, the TV shows you watch the books you read, do you ever consider the artist's (meaning actor, artist, writer) political views, moral upbringing, or public acts? Hmmm....
Over the last few months there have been examples (mainly actors) of artists behaving inappropriately in public and those who have declared 'I can't watch their show anymore', 'I can never watch a film he has written', 'every time I see him on the screen I cringe'.
Some recent examples in the public eye have included Michael Richards of Seinfeld, Isiah Washington of Grey's Anatomy and one that always comes to mind for me is Woody Allen. I am sure there are many, many more (Oh I just though of another... Bill Clinton he is not an artist I know, well actually he has written a book, but you get my drift)
I really enjoy Seinfeld, Grey's Anatomy and I love Woody Allen films. I guess by viewing this shows and movies I am supporting their livelihoods. Am I also condoning their behaviour?
Is there more to the story that what has been presented to us? I would say probably. But I doubt it would absolve them completely of what they have done.
I do not have any answers. But I guess my actions speak louder than words.

Recent observations:

1. I have grown older much faster than I would have liked.
2. Some things never change.
3. Eating garbage (not actual garbage but I am sure it does, I mean junk food - eating no fruits and vegetables) makes you feel like crap ( like I didn't know that one)
4. I am a total drama queen.
5. I love George on Grey's Anatomy - his character is someone I would like to date. I can't stay T.R. Knight since I do not know him personally, he is gay and sorry T.R. I have enough friends.

Cooking Tip of the day: Bake cookies on a sheet of parchment paper. A movie that stays with you. In fact, the last activity of my day on Sunday was viewing the film. I got home and went to bed immediately, I barely slept because all I could think about was the movie. The film is based on a novel written by P. D James and takes place a little over 20 years into the future. The world is a very scary place. The premise is that all women are infertile and the youngest human on earth has died and obviously humanity is facing extinction. Depressing! Depressing! Depressing! Every scene in this movie is depressing. The story is so captivating and very realistic. This element is probably what haunted me the other night. Clive Owen is amazing is in this film. The writer and director Alfanso Cuaron does a really good job. I haven't seen any of his other films, but he has received lots of critical acclaim. The only element that I would have changed in the story would be that men are infertile, as if women need that kind of guilt.

Comments for Today

1. I love when my friends from Trent come and visit. Laughing about 'old times' is good for you.

2. My cat is doing well (for now).

3. I really, really want to visit Australia. I need to meet my family.

4. Do you catch Grey's last Thursday? I loved it and I love George.

5. A really good deal in town: two steak dinners and a bottle of fairly decent wine at Lieutenant's Pump for $35.

6. I love cake.

7. My work schedule is a bit wonky for the next little while, it takes time to get adjusted.

8. I slept for 10 hrs last night. How great is that?

Cooking Tip of the Day: Before beginning to cook from a recipe; review it thoroughly and make sure you understand the instructions. You will be able to savour every step of the process this way.

The Best Carrot Cake

Tonight I made a carrot cake for a co-worker's birthday tomorrow. I have made this cake a few times and it has always been a hit. I highly recommend this recipe. I have tasted no other carrot cake like it. The secret to this receipe is the icing. Next time you want to make a carrot cake, make this one and the compliments will be forthcoming. The recipe is from the LCBO Food and Drink magazine, the magazine is free and comes out 6 times a year. The next issue comes out on Wednesday, January 10th - pick one up at the LCBO. It always has wonderful ideas and recipes.

Some good things that happened today:
1. My flat tire was fixed for free.
2. I finished this massive and incredibly boring project at work.
3. I went to Shoppers Drug Mart and only bought what I went in for.
4. My cat seems relatively normal.

Cooking Tip of the Day: See above.

Cooking...

I started this blog to talk about cooking and I got a little distracted (this happens to me easily). So this entry is dedicated to the subject. Why do I love to cook? I find it extremely relaxing. And I love the taste of food. And it is something that I am good at (cooking that is...). Eating normally involves socializing, so I guess that's another link. I also enjoy cooking for others. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing others enjoy your creations. If I had more time, funds and my own personal sous-chef to prepare and clean up after me I think I would have dinner parties all the time. Now don't get me wrong, sometimes there is nothing like a box of Kraft dinner and an episode of Grey's.

I also enjoy reading cookbooks, looking for new recipes to try. I have listed a few links on my blog, that have really good recipes... you should check it out.

Things that have happened to me today:

1. My car got a flat today.. a nail embedded in my brand new tire!! UGGH!

2. My cat is still not feeling well and I had to clean up after her.

3. My mom made me spaghetti and it was delicious.

4. I enjoyed some Godiva chocolates and some Starbucks.... which almost makes up for #1 and #2.

Cooking Tip of the Day: If you are new to the culinary arts start off slow. Cook simple recipes that take shorter amounts of time to prepare and have a smaller list of ingredients. Gradually introduce more complicated recipes. This way you will avoid frustration. For example if you have never prepared a meal for friends do not start off with something like veal scalopini with a mushroom and red wine reduction. Try a roast. It's simple to do while very impressive.

DreamGirls

I saw Dreamgirls tonight. What a fantastic movie.
100% pure entertainment. If you want to see this movie, see it in a modern, fully equipped theatre not the cheap $4 theatre or on DVD- it's just not the same. The music is great and the performances are wonderful. What talent! I am sure this movie came easy to it's performers. I doubt they worked hard, that's how talented they are. It's just been a long time since I have been to a movie and really enjoyed the show.

Today was interesting because:
1. My boss brought in her wedding video to watch at lunch.
2. I realized that my brother is not perfect (while I knew this - it just hit me you know?)
3. My vet called and told me there doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong with my cat. (Maybe it's all in my head?).

Cooking Tip of the Day: Try cooking rice in the microwave. The Fox TV show The OC was cancelled yesterday. The news didn't really surprise me, but it makes me a little sad. Some really good TV moments were created on this show. One of the best lines ever, "Welcome to the OC Bitch' was written for Orange County. This show was much more sophisticated then it's predecessors. I guess Misha Barton was smart to leave when she did. It is always better to leave a party early gracefully than late, drunk and making an ass of yourself? We will have to see. Last show is February 22nd, 2007. I will be attending an OC finale party at my place.

Things I discovered today:

Italian dried pasta is much better than North American dried pasta.

The only way to groom my cat is to sedate her.

It is possible to screw up even the most simple task (don't worry it wasn't me)

I do get Veronica Mars with my cable (thanks to digital cable) and can watch the 3 rd season every Tuesday at 9pm.

Cooking Tip of the day: Be adventurous when cooking and eating you never know... you might like it! Cooking becomes much more interesting when tasting new foods or combinations for the first time. This will also boost your confidence in the kitchen.

Drama Queen?

Today I have decided to share my blog with others. Most of you know I tend to be a little bit of a drama queen, please keep that in mind when reading my blog.

Today I returned to work after a two+ week vacation from work. I had a lovely time over the holidays, it's nice to see friends and family. I love it!!

I have noted today -

I will be very busy January 13th, 2007

My birthday wish list

I love fajitas!

I really enjoyed my new CD - Jim Bryson - the north side benches http://www.jimbryson.org/index.shtml

My cat is crazy

Cooking Tip of the day: Don't get stressed about cooking, it will only lead to disaster. I usually love this time of year. The gatherings, the cooking, the gifts. This year it seems forced. What depresses me the most, as this is the time of year I look forward to most, after its over, not sure what there is to look forward to. It seems like I have become every one else. Not many people I know enjoy the holidays and if they do, it seems they need to talk about all the negative aspects.
And this brings me to my point, so what if I don't get into the holiday season. Is that really such a big deal that I feel that way? Not really, it's just saddens me. The holidays always was a time of year that I always enjoyed and this year, the days are like every other day.

Cooking tip of the day: Bake some of your favorite holiday treats, if only just for you.

The Joy of Cooking

A new blog, a new day. No recipes for today, unless you are looking for a recipe for disaster. Ha !Not sure how this blog will evolve, but cooking is a part of my life that I enjoy. Often I spend my time sharing things that I do not enjoy about life, but I thought it was time that I started sharing things that I love about life. The first tip is simple, but will provide you with an insight into the culinary arts that no one could provide.

Cooking tip for the day: Buy yourself a copy of the Joy of Cooking, it's the only cookbook you will ever need.
